Chocolate can be like poison for a dog. A stimulant named THEOBROMINE , similar to caffeine, can cause eventual heart and nervous system injury or organ dysfunction. Milk chocolate is toxic to the degree of 1 ounce per pound of weight. SEMI SWEET is much stronger and can cause injury per ounce per 3-6 pounds, roughly double the toxicity of milk chocolate. BAKERS CHOCOLATE is toxic for 1 ounce per 10 pound dog. At only one ounce per 33 pounds of weight, the COCOA BEAN is hugely toxic to any dog. NEVER FORGET, chocolate is not a good thing for your dog.
I met a victim the other day that is still alive. A dog named Milo, a fuzzy yellow lab, was diagnosed with pancreatitis. The owner informed me her dog had eaten a pound of chocolate. By the time they discovered what had happened, they didn’t even know when he might have ingested it, just empty wrappers under a table, it was too late to undue organ damage. There had been no signs of illness until the next day. Diarrhea and vomiting should be the most common symptom. Only then did they know to go to the vet. it was the weekend and with no intial symptoms it seemed OK to wait until Monday to see if everything was fine. They should have done two things immediately. By simply ingesting the two following ingredients a dogs organ could have been rescued.
Induce vomiting if ever you suspect any toxic ingestion with the exception of caustic substances such as draino or bleach. Your primary medicine cabinet remedies for poison control are as follows:
HYDROGEN PEROXIDE given 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight, squirted down the throat with a syringe, or soaked into a piece of bread and fed, will induce vomiting, in most cases, within 20 minutes. If there is no vomit occuring the first time, repeat the process and try again, but only once more. I have never not had a dog vomit, but if it does not then GO TO THE VET. However, usually vomiting will solve many issues. A dogs digestive track is short and easily vacated with vomiting when induced soon enough. Because dogs digest quickly, about 2 hours, vomiting must be induced quickly for a good result. LOOK AT THE VOMIT! See what you see. Look closely to see if you see what you thought you would see? Garbage? Plants?
Hydrogen peroxide will induce vomiting, but should be followed by Activated Charcoal Caps to fully cleanse the sytem. Although I have never located an exact dose for the charcoal it is relatively harmless and can only help. An average dose of 2 tabs works effectively on my 30 pound dog. It is similar to your filtration system. Charcoal is the all absorbing ingredient that filters bad ingredients out of our drinking water. If you introduce charcoal into the digestive system it will absorb toxins very well removing harmful side effects of toxic foods. When you suspect anything at all that might cuase a stomach ache or indigestion back it up with CHARCOAL TABS. Effective results are most often the case.
So in summary, when in doubt about what your dog ate, or if you are sure it was chocolate, INDUCE VOMITING and FOLLOW with ACTIVATED CHARCOAL tabs.
Go to the vet if you do not see your dog vomit successfully. However, when in doubt, GO TO THE V ET.
